At the dawn of video game consoles, one of the top requests from every hardcore gamer was a football video game for their system, naturally. The downside was, the gaming technology wasn't quite up to speed yet, so video football fanatics had to settle, in a big way. To try to generate excitement, the creators of this one insisted it featured "all the excitement" of actual football. Competition was nonexistent, so this one was a huge hit for the biggest video game console in the day. Those players don't even look human. There's no getting around that one You think that photo looks limited, you should see the gameplay itself. Technology was so inadequate back then, that every moving player flickered to the point where you could barely see the action. The sound effects were just brutal. And worse, the screen didn't even scroll. Not long afterwards, the main competition developed a more advanced football video game for their console. This next one was a valiant attempt to make a more realistic football video game. Better, but not great.
Yes, people were pretty stoked to see some improvements, but this wasn't the sports video game to put sports video games on top. That wouldn't come until several years down the line. This next one, coming out for the next generation of game consoles at the end of the 80s, was a sensation, and still beloved today. For a long time, it was the gold standard by which football video games were held. It's certainly easy to see why that one was a hit - the gameplay was far more sophisticated, incorporating actual offensive and defensive strategies. Football video games went to the next level with that one, due to the much needed upgrades. And given that they're making a new online version, there's still a following for it. Yet, it's still a poor man's PS3 Madden 10. Once you've viewed all the other games, have a gander at PS3 Madden 10. We've come a long way, and you, along with football video games, have been the largest beneficiary. But there's no purpose in ragging on the early games. You get it. Those games, while archaic, got us to where we are today, and for that, they deserve their place in the video game hall of fame (though that first one may be better off in "video game hall of shame.") Of course, PS3 Madden 10 has really taken the ball and ran with it, which is cause for serious celebration in the video game world. And of course, the critics are equally enthusiastic about PS3 Madden 10, which is even more good news for fans of the franchise. Anytime you read a PS3 Madden 10 review, you'll see things like "realistic and enjoyable." EA Sports has sacked all the competition with PS3 Madden 10, to nobody's surprise. There's no debating it - PS3 Madden 10 is an all-time great sports video game. Not to disparage the other PlayStation sports video games - they're all pretty excellent in their own right, but PS3 Madden rules the playing field. Hardcore gamers hold this one in the highest of regard. This is the game for the real men, not just the little kids, when you go toe-to-toe for some serious money.
